Changbai Mountain has been listed in the "National Volcanic Geological Park". Its unique volcanic landform is of great scientific value, is the important material of Earth's evolutionary history study and a significant argument revealing the formation and evolution of life on Earth. There are verses praising it as “grand mountains holding the Tianchi Lake, and the forest sea storing treasures” and “one mountain with four seasons, and weather different in every ten miles”, so it is a magical place with worldwide attention. Changbai Mountain scenic area enjoys rich tourism resources: spectacular volcanic landform and landscapes; typical mountain forest ecosystem; flora and fauna of wide range and variety; exotic snow scenery in the north; widespread volcanic mineral springs, waterfalls and lakes and unique cultural landscape, historic sites and folk culture. At the crater on the top of the volcanic cone appears a lake over time – Tianchi Lake. With an oval area of 9.82 square km, water surface of 2189.1 meters in elevation, average depth of 204 meters, it is the world’s highest, the China’s largest crater lake and the most famous attraction in Changbai Mountain. The legend of "monster" also adds to its mystique. The waterfall, falling from a corner of Tianchi Lake like a jade belt, is the source of the Songhua River, Tumen River and Yalu River. Changbai Mountain Grand Canyon where gather peaks, rocks, valleys, streams, trees and grass, is grand and magnificent. In the summer of 1983, Comrade Deng Xiaoping climbed to the very top of Changbai Mountain, inscribed “Changbai Mountain,” “Tianchi Lake” on the banner, and sighed with feeling: “Life is indeed a great pity without once being on Changbai Mountain!”

Jilin Rime

Jilin Rime, along the bank of Songhua River in Jilin City, is as clean as ice and as pure as jade. Jilin Rime, featured by poetic beauty of “spring in winter”, is known as China’s “Four Natural Wonders” along with Guilin Scenery, Yuannan Stone Forest and Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. Although there are 60 to 70 days with the temperature of minus 20 degrees centigrade in Jilin’s winter, the Songhua River across the city still goes forward ceaselessly. It offers two necessary and contradictory conditions for the formation of rime: extremely low temperature and sufficient moisture. The big temperature difference between the river and air makes the vapor continuously released by Songhua River coagulate in trees and grasses on the banks, forming the “tree hanging” up to 40 to 60mm in terms of thickness, which is far beyond the ordinary ones with 5 to 10mm. Jilin Rime is one of the thickest, minimum density and least loose texture rimes, the ice crystals composed of which can reflect almost all rays of light. The rime looks extremely crystal clear, so it is totally worthy of being the best rime. The wonder of Jilin rime with all glory and unique charm wins full of praise of endless tourists at home and abroad. Whenever the rime comes, the bank of Songhua River looks like “A sudden visit by the spring breeze brings white pear blossoms to thousands of trees.” and “silver-like flowers in willow and pine trees”, bringing people to a picturesque fairy land. In 1991, President Jiang Zemin visited Jilin City, and he highly appraised the scenery by writing a poem: “chilly willows along the cold river, ice flowers in nice trees, the ‘tree hanging’ in Jilin deserves its reputation.” In 1998, he composed a poem again, that is, “chilly willows along the cold river in sunshine, ice flowers in trees seem like a picture in spring, such scenery is the secret working of nature; everything is doomed to be done with efforts.”
