 1. Introduction to the Project

1.1 Project Background

1.1.1 Product Introduction

Graphene is the new-type two-dimensional atom crystal constituted of mono-atomic layers, connected by carbon atom in sp2 hybridization connection, its basic structural unit is the most stable benzene six-membered ring in organic materials, and thickness of crystal film is only 0.335nm. It is the most ideal two-dimensional nano material so far.

Graphene has big specific surface area, excellent electric properties, wonderful crystallinity, outstanding chemical stability and thermodynamic stability. Graphene has theoretical specific surface area as high as 2,600m2/g that can be compared with or even exceed the specific surface area of carbon nano tube; stable lattice structure enables carbon atom to have excellent electric conductivity. Electron in graphene does not have mass, but moves at constant speed, which is zero-gap semi-conductor material, with carrier mobility much higher than that of silicon. In addition, in theory, its electron mobility is same as hole mobility, so its n field effect and p field effect are symmetrical, electron mobility can reach 15,000cm2/(V·s), and it even appears unusual integer quantum Hall behavior; it has outstanding heat conducting performance (3,000w/(m·K) and mechanical performance (1,060GPa).

Graphene is widely used in numerous research fields, including microelectronics (electronic device, microchip, etc.), photoelectric display (display screen of computer and mobile phone, etc.), energy technology (battery material, capacitor, etc.), chemical sensing (chemical sensing, bio-sensing, etc.), aerospace (high temperature resistance, abrasion resistance, mechanics, etc.), and military engineering (anticorrosion, wear-resisting, lubricating, etc.), etc..

1.1.2 Market Prospects

(1) Current status of domestic graphene research field

In this field, China started very early, and has attached great importance on R&D and application. In the scientific research field, China publishes high-level research works of graphene every year, occupying international leading position in applied research for the fields of controllable growth, large single crystal preparation, low cost preparation method, photoelectric application, touch screen, bulletproof and electromagnetic shielding. Especially in this year, China has got two heat-stirring achievements in the aspects graphene monocrystal and film materialpreparation, on the one hand, Xie Xiaoming team of Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, CAS realized 1.5”graphene monocrystal preparation, making us take a big step toward graphene chip era, and exceed UK and USA in the field of monocrystal preparation; on the other hand, Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology realized thousand-meter scale graphene film preparation. In the field of graphene film, South Korea has owned leading technology and realized big-dimension preparation at the earliest (2010, 21”). However, this technology has not been extensively applied in touch screen and flexible display due to its high cost, which lacks competitiveness compared with ITO (100 yuan/m2), and realization of this technology can control price to be 50 yuan/m2. It is very likely to put it into market this year and next year, break through technical monopoly of Japan and South Korea regarding high-quality ITO field, and enter flexible touch screen era in advance.

(2) Current status of domestic graphene application field

In graphene generation and application fields, Chinese enterprises have also taken front place of the world. As early as in 2010, an enterprise (Shenzhen BTR) published that it had realized industrial production. Moreover, from the end of 2013, graphene industrial parks in China have successively been established in cities like Chengdu, Suzhou, Changzhou, Tianjin and Beijing; in addition, the National Graphene Innovative Demonstration Base has been established, which contains Qingdao International Graphene Innovation Center, Changzhou Graphene Scientific and Technological Industrial Park, Ningbo Graphene Application Demonstration Base, Shenzhen Institute of Graphene Applied Technology, and Wuxi Graphene Industrial Development Demonstration Zone.

The development of graphene technology and application has been supported and focused by the country. In particular, its investment this year has increased, and graphene was listed in new material planning of the 13th Five-year Plan. In the end of the year, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Science and Technology jointly printed and issued Several Opinions on Innovative Development of Graphene Industry (2015 No. 435). Opinions specify to promote development of graphene industry and innovate key technologies. First, break through common key techniques of graphene material scale preparation; second, enhance intellectual property system construction, encourage enterprises and colleges, scientific research institutes and intellectual property organizations to cooperate and develop graphene industry’s key technology intellectual property utilization protection system construction, improve patent quantity and quality, regularly publish patent situation of graphene industry, establish graphene intellectual property operation platform, improve intellectual property transaction and protection mechanism, facilitate efficient utilization of intellectual property; third, set up industrial development service platform. Depend on existing resources, improve public R&D, technical transformation, inspection and detection and information exchange platforms for the development of graphene industry, establish open reference database of graphene material and device performance parameters, guide graphene material production enterprises to unite downstream users, relevant scientific research institutes, and establish cooperative development mechanism concerning graphene product production and performance evaluation.

(3) Forecast of graphene industry

For the entire graphene market, obvious rising trend will appear from 2012 to 2018. In 2014, Chinese domestic graphene reached USD 22.4 million. With industrial application of graphene accelerating, it is estimated that, global market scale will reach USD 65 million by 2018.

1.1.3 Technical Analysis

(1) Graphene preparation technology

State Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry initially realized high-quality batch preparation in China in 2010. This method for graphene preparation with expansion intercalation has the following advantages:

Compared with the most common oxidized graphene restoration method, the graphene prepared with this method has high purity (free from other reducing agent decorated on the graphene surface), it is featured by low oxygen content, few lattice defect, big surface area, good stripping effect (mainly distributed on 3rd - 6th layers) and high electric conductivity, and particular electrical and mechanical properties of graphite will not be influenced.  

High output and short time required. Compared with mechanical stripping method, this method does not need repeated ball grinding, long-time ultrasound, water processing, or even difference separation. This method is used to strip graphite with chemical reaction, having very fast reaction process. 1-5g graphite can be stripped away in only several minutes, and then dredged for water processing to separate rapidly.  

Low energy consumption. Repeated long-time ball grinding or ultrasound consuming high-power is not required. It is different from thermal stripping that should be stripped in inert gas and reducing gas at 1000, consuming plenty of electric energy.  

Low cost. All raw materials applied are industrial products at low price, and suitable for industrial production.

⑤ Simple operation. Chemical reaction stripping and dredging for water processing processes are required only. The preparation conditions are not so rigor and complicated as CVD method.  

(2) Graphene is used in heat conducting film material in heat dissipation field

Graphene is a material with highest thermal conductivity among existing materials. Powder graphene has broad development space in this field. It has raw material from crystalline flake graphite and owns high thermal conductivity, so both cost and performance can be considered. High-quality graphene is very suitable for this field. This kind of graphene film with metal luster has high degree of tendency, heat conducting value is 2 times of traditional flexible graphite paper, horizontal heat conducting factor 975.522W/mk; vertical heat conducting factor 5.02W/mk; tensile strength 11.15mpa (maximum 34.8℃). Furthermore, this material cannot be made by other domestic research institutions and companies, because most of companies and institutions mainly produce oxidized graphene and graphene material with extremely small laminar dimension, generally it is unable to form film, or the thermal conductivity is poor after film formation.

1.1.4 Advantageous Conditions of Project Construction

Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry has 917 employees, including China 7 academicians of CAS, 4 CAS academicians to be developed, 133 researchers, respectively 4, 2, 8, 30 and 45 winners of State Thousand-People Plan, State Ten Thousand People Plan, State Million People Talent Engineering, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, CAS “Hundred-People Plan”, 4 research teams selected in the new research group of National Research Foundation, and 1 research team selected in the international partner program of CAS and SAFEA.

1.2 Content and Scale of Project Construction

This project has annual planned preparation capacity of 50t graphene, using 50t graphene to produce graphene heat conducting film.

Estimated production capacity is 1 million m2 graphene heat conducting film.
